Where to Install applications for all users?

Like in windows there exists x:/Program Files/ to install applications, where shuold I extract or install applications in linux?

For example, I want to add aMsn for all the users in the computer, but where do I need to extract it in order for all users to access it without restriction? Also I want to "install" Firebird that way.

Help would be appreciated, Im back to linux after some months and now I plan to stay with it.

thanks in advance.

As long as a user has permissions to read the file they can in Linux. Now if you want to have a user type something like mozilla instead of /usr/local/mozilla/mozilla you need to make sure that it is in their path 'echo $PATH' or create a link to somewhere in their path... 'ln -s /usr/local/mozilla/mozilla /usr/bin/mozilla' (/usr/bin is in my path)

So I can install the applications in /usr/bin/amsn for example? If the user can read that folder, then I can create shortcuts in the desktop, right?
