Where to find Icons from newly installed programs

For every program I've installed, I can see an icon in the applications menu. But, I'd like to be able to find the actual icon so I can use it on panels and such in gnome.

Is there a standard place where icons from the applications menu are found?

Okay, I see they're scattered throughout many places.

But the best way to find them (through gnome, anyways) is to right-click applications, select edit menus, select an item & click properties, and then hit the button with the actual icon on it.

This process brings up a file browser window to show you where an applications' icon is.

OR

You can scour through the endless amount of folders & icon files in the /usr/share/icons directory.
