Where should I save my driver file
Hello everyone,
I have two questions regarding download files online to my hard drive. First of all, which location should I save the file to? and when I unpack the driver file to a "writeable" location? where is writeable location? FYI: I have /boot, /, /var, /usr, swap and /home partitions. Thanks and remember to vote =) |
This is what I've done, and it works well for me as it reminds me of what I have downloaded and where it is so to speak.
I've created a directory my my users home directory, e.g. /home/user named downloads, e.g. /home/user/downloads. Inside of that directory I've created different directories for the different things I download, e.g. /home/user/downloads/drivers, /home/user/downloads/pics, etc. Hope that helps. good luck. |
thanks for your prompt reply. Do you know what's "writeable" location?
I read somewhere that it's better to create a /usr partition if you want to download a lot of software/program? I don't know what's the adventage of doing that? Can anyone explian the logic to me? Thanks |

Write able is relative, e.g. If I am root, which I should not be btw just for downloading something, I can write anywhere.
If however, I am user, highly recommended, I am limited to where I have write permissions. I think you're getting to the question of running out of space for installed software, if that is where you're going with this, you'll want to look at your partitioning scheme. A forum search for partitioning should provide a mass of links for your use with many different configurations, for your choosing. Some things to consider when partitioning for an install. What will the machine be used for, e.g. a desktop every day pc, a web server, a file server, etc. Your use of the machine should be considered when partitioning. Hope this helps. good luck. |
