Where should i install LILO for Knoppix HD install?
Hello
I am going to do a Knoppix 3.6 HD install on my computer which already had Win Xp with NTFS file system My system specs are: Processor---->AMD Athlon A64 3000+ having Socket 939 Motherboard----->MSI RS480 with ATI x300 Onboard gfx Ram------>512 Mb DDR Hard Disk----->Samsung 80 Gb SATA I have installed WinXp with NTFS and 3 partitions of sizes 29.2,29.2 and 15.9 gb respectively. The LIVE Cd works perfectly on my machine. While doing a HD install i plan to install Knoppix on my third partition of 15.9 gb which is completely empty I referred to the following link about the HD install knoppix.net/wiki/Hd_Install_HowTo and the following link for the dual boot configuration linuxquestions.org/questions/answers.php?action=viewarticle&artid=441 My question is: I have read conflicting opinions on several HowTos on where to install LILO for dual boot..some say it should be on the partition where the MBR is present while others say it should be on a different partition The link about dual boot also mentioned that it should be on a different partition Is installing LILO on same partition as MBR bound to cause problems for me? What do u guys suggest i do specifically for a Knoppix install? I am a newbie and am willing to try out instructions that u provide I would really be glad if you could help out on the step-bystep procedure regarding LILO install or modifying LILO config file later on Thank you |
Whatever is on the MBR will be the first thing to boot on the system. If you do not install LILO there and leave the Windows bootloader there, then you must configure the Windows bootloader to dual-boot linux, which is far more difficult (IMO) than configuring LILO to boot Windows. On all of my systems, LILO is in the MBR.

So you are saying i should just go ahead with the LILO install on the default MBR option?
What are the risks of installing MBR on LILO? How can i protect myself for this? Win Xp doesnt have a create Rescue disc option also i think. |
Just make sure you add Win XP to your lilo config. For example, with winXP on my /dev/hdc2 partition, my lilo.conf contains:
Code:
other=/dev/hdc2 |
The MBR can be overwritten any number of times.
The XP installation can be used to restore XP MBR, just boot it up, drop to recovery console and type MBR. Alternatively just boot the PC up with a DOS floppy and type fdisk /mbr. There is no risk, only ignorance of not knowing how to get the MBR back. |
