Where is the original linux?

I've been searching, and searching, and searching, and all i see are all these distros. I just want to try Linux on a virtual machine, is there any way I can find the original Linux? Not Ubuntu, not Fedora, just linux.iso. If i can't get it anywhere but to buy a cd, tell me.

The oldest existing distro is Slackware; that is probably what you want There is no "original Linux" unless you want to go to the kernel archives and run the oldest version you can find. Of course, just the kernel won't get you very far.

Welcome to LQ!!

The "original Linux" was just a kernel. In the current common--albeit imprecise-- usage, "Linux" means the complete operating system, including all the utilities. The latter is typically from the "GNU" project, hence the common name "Gnu Linux".
