Where is syslogd loaded?

Hi all,

I have a touch with an embedded linux controller (2.4.18 - i386). I need to write an utility for reading event messages (/var/log/messages). The problem I have: instead of running daemon (syslogd v1.3-3) and right configuration file (/etc/syslog.conf) the "messages" log doesn't exist (I already tried to create it - didn't help). Now, my afraid that , because it is embedded system with small flash (no disk) on system boot the syslog daemon is running with special parameters (to read from other configuration file or something else...) I want to review the parameters.
I am wonder which script/configuration file can contain information about syslog starting on system boot?
If somebody could say an other reason why "/var/log/messages" doesn't exist - I'll be glad.

As all boot scripts, you can find syslog daemon start script in /etc/rc.d/init.d/ (or something similar... the path depends on the distro you use)
About your /var/log/messages... see either /etc/syslog.conf or klogd. Cause I know that I don't have /var/log/messages file on my LFS but if I have to add it that would be one of the previous solutions that I'll look at...
