where is registry in linux? how do i modify reg keys?

Hi ppl! Migrated from Win to red Hat 9 several months ago, and find linux fun to use. I also have realized its power compared to WIN after performing several system maintenance operations.

I am however confused: win had a nice regedit utility that allowed direct access to registry. Where can I find something of this kind (central registry keys depository) in my linux - please respond comprehensively so that newbie like me can understand? do you experts recommend amending anything there (if there truly is such depository) - i ask this because i know it's pretty dangerous in Win. Thx for help in advance

there is no registery equivelent, live kernel configuration can be done in the /proc directory, systemwide configuration files are stored in the /etc directory, and users configuration is in their home directory. all editable with your favourite plain and simple text editor.
