Where have my minimise/maximise buttons gone from my bottom panel thing?

Hi, gang. Am new to Linux and have installed Ubuntu. Great, BUT, few probs. Firstly taskbar disappeared when running Firefox. Got that sorted, but ever since then the little (too small, in my view) buttons on the bottom RHS that appear when you minimise a window don't appear anymore, so I can't maximise them. Any ideas what I can do? Idiot's version, please. OH, BTW, how can I get Ubuntu to play DVDs? I mailed them offering to pay for software and got a gibberish response!?

Love Linux, BTW. Vista was making me tear my hair out>

Whoah! No need to be so drastic; these things are fixable. Starting again is an attitude often suited to that other operating system!

Pay?? This is called Free Software!

The non-appearing buttons you describe sound like a problem with your panel. If you right click where the icons you've lost used to appear, you should be able to select an option "Add to panel". This will open a new window called "Add to panel" where listed should be a "Window List" option (scroll down); if you select this then click on Add, a new applet will be added to your panel which will be a list of all the open windows. Unless I've misinterpreted what it is you've lost.

For DVD playback you need to install something called libdvdcss. This link is probably a good place to start:
