Where does linux look for drivers (nvidia in particular) when it's booting?
 

What path does linux look to for the nvidia driver module when it's booting?

Mine says it can't find it, but I searched and it exists...

wan t to symlink it wherever linux is expecting it to be...

What exactly is the error message that you're getting? What you've posted doesn't sound like any of the error messages I've seen (and I've seen a few). Try to write down the words exactly or copy and paste from your system log. Also, is that Fedora core 1 or 2? Core 2 has issues with the Nvidia driver. Have you changed your kernel for one with an 8k stack?

Okay, there's not much time to read the error, but it's like this:

checking for nvidia kernel module [FAILED]
nvidia.ko module for 2.6.1.5-1358 kernel not found

I think that's the correct kernel number, it's definately 2.6.1.something...

What';s this about an 8k stack? I recall having seen aomething about that being a partial fix or something....can you explain please?

oops, forgot to mention I just UPGRADED to FC2 from a perfectly working (argh!) FC1, so PLEASE help me through the 8k stack thing...

Nvidia drivers dont work on fedora rc2, due to the kernel using a 4k stack instead of an 8k stack.

But theres a work around, although it requires building a new kernel.

Apart from that your stuck in 2D til they sort the problem out. If you cant be bothered with the kernel upgrade just reconfigure x to use the vesafb driver.

What are we talkin about when we say '4k stack' and '8k stack'?

Just a short technical explination on what it is.

Im probably not the best person to explain this due to my limited understanding of it, but from what i can work out the kernel stack is used by drivers and other apps as processing space. The problem with fedora core is the developers decided to set a 4k stack as default, although a number of drivers still exist that require more room (nvidia drivers, and a number of network devices, that ive seen so far). From what ive read windows uses a 12k stack. So doesnt seem to be any continuity in the scheme.

There maybe a kernel developer somewhere on these boards who can explain it better than me, but at the end of it all, someone screwed up with this. Instead of giving the other companies fair warning of the change over, and letting them sort there drivers out, its been sprung on everyone.
