Where does a Newbie start?
 

I've benn using Linux for three days now. Running various distros from a LiveCD.

Anyhow, what is the most comprehensive beginners tutorials on the web or in a book located?

Also, I'm looking for a tutor. I live in West los Angeles.

I know it sounds a little silly, but I would suggest finding something you want to do, then learning how to do it. Some good candidates off the top of my head might be to edit pictures, audio, or video; to produce a resume with LibreOffice; to design a website with Kompozer.

When I started, I played around on my brand new Linux installation for a while kind of aimlessly, then got inspired by a conversation on a business trip to use that computer to self-host my website. It's amazing how easy learning becomes when you have a goal.

Here are three resources I have found useful.

http://linux.about.com/. It's oriented to Ubuntu, but it's full of good info oriented towards beginner and intermediate users. I was no longer a beginner when I discovered it, but I still learned stuff.

http://tille.garrels.be/training/tldp/. Machtelt Garrels Intro to Linux.

http://www.slackbook.org/. Slackware oriented, but excellent on the basics, such as file structure, permissions, and the like.

I also found that just adding the word "linux" to a websearch would narrow the results wonderfully.

@Frankbell -I've been learning little things every step of the way. Soon enough I will narrow my focus onto particular projects. There is so much to learn, and im up for a good challenge.

These really are great tutorials. I would definately go through them

However in the long run, your greatest resources are going to be forums and man pages.

If you get stuck, post the question. When someone tells you some commands to run, type "man xxxx" and figure out what it is your are doing.
