Where do you put music and other files

I have silly question. I just started to get back into trying linux and the file structure is still all greek to me. I was wondering where do you all put files like music that you would like to share between users? Do you just leave create a folder /music or something? If my wife is using the computer, I want it easy for her to get to these files.

I wasn't sure if it was "ok" to just stick it anywhere or if there was generally a place people usually place these types of files.

Thanks for the help.

Generally speaking, it doesn't matter where you put them, as long as everyone has permissions. That can get tricky as a noob, but if you create /music, make sure you check out chmod and chown.

i usually put mine in /mnt/music or something just from a habbit of sharing my partitions which typically hold that sort of thing.

You can put them anywhere but like mentioned you need to setup ownerships/permissions for them.

man chmod
man chown
Using man will display the MANual page for that command ,giving you it's function and useful options.

I have /media which contains...wait for it...all my media files I don't use HAL or the assorted rubbish that goes with it however I believe it uses /media to mount devices so if you're using a DE then my layout would pose problems.
