where do i get linux??

Sorry this must be a well asked question, but where do I get the latest versions on the cheap?

I got red hat 6.2 and its having problems with my 3d vid card. Im thinking a newer version of xfree (4 i think) may help. I tried Linux mall but could not find a version below $30 and my creaky 56K couldnt handle a download.

Cheers in advance

do you live in england?

trickykid 11-12-2001 12:16 AM

you can always try www.linuxmall.com for cheap distro's.

hooligan 11-12-2001 08:48 AM

Actually Linuxmall was where I saw it for $4, but its not there now, I will keep checking though.

I live in Orlando, though I grew up on the north side of London.

Cheers again

what are you looking for? Redhat is on the frontpage of cheapbytes?

Not trying to be an asshole, but why would u want Redhat 7.0?

it was one of the worst distributions any company has ever made in the history of linux.

A rule of thumb with redhat or mandrake, dont go for their *.0 releases, wait for .2 for them to get it right

hooligan 11-14-2001 08:39 AM

why do i want it? maybe I dont know any better, but I gave the reason at the beginning of this thread.
if you have anouther suggested (dirt cheap) release of linux that is more forgiving to my hardware id love to know, ive tried all the fixes on a bunch of help files trying to resolve the vid card problem, but to no avail. all I want is a gui.

Cheers

hooligan:

If you're determined to use RH7.0, perhaps for some of the same reasons that people by M$ products, be aware that that version had a really ugly version of up2date with it that leaked file descriptors. After a couple of weeks, if you had not fixed the up2date agent, your machine would no longer boot.

hooligan 11-14-2001 04:59 PM

sorry my bad,
I did not notice the $7.99 no support version, just the $59.00 official version.

Its not that Im hell bent on using rh7 its just I want to be able to get on the internet and learn linux (unix). my jobs in networking and I see more and more jobs wanting linux experience.
with XP going for $200 or $100 upgrade, its just tooo much. not only that the whole .net thing is a little disturbing from the little i know of it

cheers vagrant
