I think most linux flavours would detect most external modems.. I have a Netcom mega-i-modem, its basic, and dead cheap, but no idea if its available over in the US. mandrake and redhat both love it. so do BeOS and windows.
I presume you mean dialup modem? If you purchase most mainstream cheapo dialup modems they will usually have a linux driver on the cd. The cd's have been very helpful on occasion especially if it's an off the wall modem. You can ask the shop assistant if it you can return it if there is no linux driver.
