where can i find "avg" after i installed it
 

helo,just today i loaded "linux 9 isadora", finding it slow going so far
i installed "avg antivirus" (just for belt and braces) its vanished and i cant find it ,also i want to use "vlc" as my default player,?? how do i do that please many thanks for any help

why do you need antivirus for linux if your not running a server. and if you were is is just to watch was is going to a windows pc through samba. open a terminall and typ avg then hit tab button. one question per thread.

Linux does NOT require an antivirus and it does NOT run slow - unless you do something really nasty. I do not know which distro you installed but then there are a few that are really good about what software they use. If you can try see if you can install something that the linux community uses.
As far as making vlc your prefered app is concerned it would depend on the the desktop you have (gnome, kde etc). Most of the times all you have to do is right click and select the proper options.

It is true that there are currently no Linux viruses in the wild and it is also true that the Linux security model, in which most tasks are done as user, and not as root, is superior to the Windows no-or-at-best-hardly-any-security model, why take chances.

It is also true that a native Linux/UNIX virus (the first virus was a UNIX virus) could come along and I don't want to be the first person to find myself infected.

All it takes is one bad guy to ruin things for lots of folks and I won't be one of those folks.

To find your avg, run as root "whereis avg" or "which avg" or, as root, run "avg --help" for the help file.

You mean aside from clamAv there is an antivirus for Linux???

AVG and F-Prot both offer Linux AVs. Others may also.

I used to use F-Prot, then they revised their program in a way that broke the "free for Linux" aspect (it was still officially free as in beer, but they broke the licensing--they've probably fixed it by now), so I moved to AVG.

I don't obsess over AV for Linux and don't think it is essential as it is for Windows, but I do think it's prudent. Just like I always lock my truck when I park it.

Well Frank It is great you feel good about your system. Could you explain how antivirus would help linux machine if there is no updates for anything like that. So as I say you will have to download it install it. Mr Cohen built it and installed it at a physical point and most likely as a user of the machine. You realize he had physical actual in the presence of the machine.

That said that is what we call a kernel security hole and thanks to Cohen we understand how it works to compromise the kernel. This is why the LINUX kernel Not the UNIX kernel is different. It is open and when the door is open we have millions of people to see the changes.
Mac virus is caused from the user installing a program. this is all physical. and if you cant open the source and read it then why install it. Why try to look through a closed door.

Security is the format today. take a simple moment and if you want to be super paranoid in linux make sure you never use default settings. Or go SElinux disrtro. why would you have a program run as root in the back ground that can look at all your system files.this is called antivirus and antivirus on linux is very unsecure for the system. Just think you physically ok'd a program to read all your files and try to execute them. Now where is the security whole.

You can use open suse - I found it more like winduhs than any other distro (that was version 11). Then there is Ubuntu that seems to be a hit with newbies.
But remember no matter what linux you install it is NOT winduhs. Give yourself time to understand it. It is not difficult it is just different.

What is the point of using something different if you are looking for more of the same? If there are things linux does better, it is precisely because it does them better. There have been several projects to produce linux distros that ape windows and all of them have failed. There must be a reason.
My advice: stop looking for ways to make linux behave like windows. The longer you resist, the harder you make things on yourself. Just learn - there are dozens of great sites that offer free instruction - and before long you will stop caring. Worse, you may become one of the many who wonder why MS can't do certain things the linux way (say, software management or scripting) ;-).

ok folks ive cracked it,i am now using linux mint 9 isadora,and its performing like a train,compared to windows.
ive got my photoes, music,documents,and all my favourites,imported ,and everything is looking good,i appreciate the suggestion and help from you all,i would like to ask one mre question please,about suggested cleaners,etc,such as "ccleaner",as used in my windows,is there a tool ,or any tools,that you would recomend for linux,all suggestions and any recomendations appreciated thanks again:Pengy:

Congrats on a job well done. Back to your antivirus question. To date there have been no Linux viruses alive in the wild but it is certainly possible that there may be some in the future. Notwithstanding that, it is highly unlikely that any antivirus you install today would offer you any protection against such future beasts.
