Where are the Debian 4 error/crash/dump files written _during shutdown_?

I have a crash that only occurs as the system is shutting down. I can see some of the text, but then the system halts and the messages have scrolled off the screen.

Are there any error/crash/dump files that will log problems that occurred during the shutdown sequence? I need to be able to reboot and go look at what is in these files to see what happened during the last shutdown.

generally logs get saved in

did you have a look through them there yet?

have a look at
if anything's stated in there.
that is if the machine still manages to write it down somewhere before it goes off (or however it crashes)
