when i try to use the su command...
 
my keyboard won't work when i try to type in my password(root) when i hit the keys nothing nothing is entered.

How do you know that nothing is entered? Do you hit 'enter' and get an invalid password kind of message?

Its designed that way for security - just type it and press enter
