when compiling my kernel.......
Hi,
I'm using RedHat 8 on a A7V8X-X mobo, 512MB DDR, with onboard network (via-rhine). I'm trying to convert over to linux completely and i'm slowly building up RedHat 8 on my system on a separate drive... I keep winxp on another. I still think i'm a beginner in lnux but I've been exploring it for about a year now... and i'm still learning alot, there is so much. I just started to compile my first kernel and understanding how it works. The thing i'm having a problem with is this error when I try to create my bootdisk (no I don't use LILO or anything yet). "no module via-rhine found for kernel 2.4.21" My old kernel 2.4.18-14 works with my network card. Is there a way to find out what its using to make it work.. so I can select it in the xconfig of my new kernel? I just need a lil nudge in the right direction. Thanks!! - figgy |
safest bet is to use a default redhat config for the newer kernel...they come with nearly EVERYTHING loaded as a module...
from there you can recompile what you're SURE you dont need. at least that's what i do |
oh, how do i go about doing that? just starting over?

check /usr/src/whateverkernelsource/configs/
then copy the config matching your system (the filenames are self-explanatory), to /usr/src/whateverkernelsource/.config |
thanks that worked great :)
i just gotta iron out what i dont need now :) |
glad i could help
