What would be the best distro to install fluxbox on?
 

I have been hearing some cool things about window managers like fluxbox and I was wondering what the best distro is to put it on? Is fluxbox the best window manager to use?

What is the best football team? What is the best religion? What is the best car?

The answers to these questions are completely subjective. They depend on you. The best one is the one that you like and which suits your computer.

People who like Ubuntu will tell you Ubuntu. People who like Mint will tell you Mint.And so on. That is their choice and it might not be right for you.

I guess I will use ubuntu then. Can I switch back to gnome/unity in the login screen like with gnome classic?

What distribution are you using now? I would recommend simply installing Fluxbox on your current distro (for example in Ubuntu "sudo apt-get install fluxbox") and then selecting it from your GDM login screen.

If you are looking for a pre-configured, fluxbox-based distro then I highly recommend AntiX or Linux Mint Fluxbox Edition.

As far as what to try it on: a distro that is not so heavily invested in the gui interface would be my best advice. Rather than Ubuntu, something more generic like debian. Perhaps better yet, is one of the spinoff distro's that FEATURES fluxbox and a primary option! FAR less hassle!

Feather Linux,DSL (Damn Small Linux), or fluxbuntu might serve.

Respectfully, Feather Linux was last updated 2005, Fluxbuntu 2007, and DSL 2008. All three are well past their "end of life" and feature outdated applications, unpatched bugs, and potential security risks (for example using Firefox 1.0!).

I agree with the OP's decision to experiment with Fluxbox in the comfortable, familiar, and well-supported Ubuntu 11.04 environment.

DSL is a favorite tool of mine: dependable, light, fast, and easy on the hardware. It is incredibly secure because the frugal install loads as if from a CD. It does not NEED updates as often as most.

The others are suggestions that the OP might consider. How suitable a distribution is should be left to the user, and I will be waiting and interested to read about their experiences.

No it does not impress me; "Active development and support" is one of my main criteria for choosing a distro, and I don't recommend dead projects to new users. (That being said I respect your experience and desire to continue using DSL as a trusted and familiar tool.)

However, Fluxbox is a windows manager, not a distribution, therefore I stand by my advice to benc1213: "You can easily install Fluxbox in your favorite distro; you don't need to switch distros or reinstall."

Any distro is the best distro to run Fluxbox on.

I run it Ubuntu, Debian, and Slackware.
