what version will work on a laptop

I have a older Compaq armada that I would like to run linux on
I have no idea what version will work best for my system

System info 300MHz celron, 160 meg of ram external DVD
running win 2000 pro with no major problems

remember that I'm a newbie so it would be nice to use a mandrake version, install suppose to be easier. Thank for any
help

I have a 700MHz notebook that runs RH9 without trouble. RH7.3 and RH8 also installed perfectly. The anaconda installer automatically detected all of my hardware (except for my winmodem....err...).

I would recommend checking if you have a WinModem in your Windows 2000 control panel before attempting to install Linux. If you do not have one, then I would suggest Red Hat which gave me no problems.

By the way, the install for Red Hat is very, very easy (even for newbies like us!) good luck

I run Slack 9 on my old ThinkPad 560 (Pent. 100, 72Mb RAM)
Granted, I can't do a lot with it, it's rock solid stable however, and considering I got it for free, it's just a fun toy to mess around with until it breaks. Fun fun fun.......

pretty much most distros will run on that laptop.

I have almost the same stats on my laptop and I run Mandrake 9.1 quite happily.
