What to download and how to install it?

I have just 3 days ago joined the penguin fleet with Libranet.
Damn nice it is to be free from the dictates of General Gates.

So, to my question:

As an - until now - exclusive windows/mac os USER, the whole bash thing and all is very new and different, but very nice and liberating. I just find it very hard to come by any online documents or manuals that goes in depth with what to download (extensions, sip's what?) and how to install it using the console.

Of course this must be a very simple task, since everybody seems to take it for granted that everybody master these basic procedures.

Any guidance, please?

what do you want to do? do you have X working i assume so, though you talk only about bash, so again, what do you want to do, there are a plethora of options and different projects available, try for your software needs i like mozilla browser the best gkrellm2 is a handy and wonderful little application for keeping tabs on your system while having a massive number of useful plugins mplayer is a good app for video, gaim is my favorite chat program, the gimp is good for playing around with images, openoffice is a good MS office replacement, and xmms is a nice simplistic music player

Different distributions, different tools.

If you install a distro's package, that distro's package management tool should find stuff for you. For example:

# See rpms installed on current system
rpmquery --all | less
rpmquery --all > <filename>
rpmquery --all | grep -i <plaintext>

# Guides to software management
LNAG - How do I install a program I downloaded from the Internet?
Rute Guide's software explanation
You might want to check out CheckInstall to manage source code installations/uninstallation
