What to do if I'm running SUSE 8.1?

Hello,

I inherited a PC running SUSE 8.1 and just tried to update it via YaST Online Update. If failed, so I started Googling the error message. However, in my hunt, I can't even seem to find any 8.1 updates anywhere. Given this info, do I need to upgrade to a latter version (9.3?) in order to get updates? If so, does this cost anything, or is it freely available?

Thanks for any direction you can give, as I'm not clear on what the current state of affairs is with SUSE.

if you go to the download linux link from this website suse 10.0 is there and free of charge if im not mistaken. i was running 10.0 and its a good distro alot has changed since 9.3 that i have seen better yet here is the link to the download page http://iso.linuxquestions.org/version.php?version=219 those are the 5cds that you should burn and install. if you want to look at other distros go to http://iso.linuxquestions.org/search...by=distro_name

I agree with boxerboy. If you could find a site for 8.1 updates, it would only update the 8.1 packages, not upgrade to newer versions, which is what you are after. Big difference between update and upgrade.

im not even sure suse 8 is even supported anymore. thats one good reason to change to 10 also if i remember right suse is a pain in the butt to upgrade if you even can from 8.1

I think SuSE holds updates + patches for the current release and the 4 (or 5) previous, so there are probably are no patches available for you to get at since they will have now been removed. As others have suggested, I'd upgrade rather than update, which is pretty painless in SuSE as you'll be missing a lot of security updates + performance improvements anyay sticking with 8.1.
