What to add to etc/file/host for proper boot?

I'm new to linux and at boot up I get the following message.
Could not look up internet address for Compaq. This will prevent gnome from operating correctly. It may be possible to correct the problem by adding Compaq to the file/etc/host. My questios is what do I add. I think I know were to add it and how, just what. Thanks for your response.

under the loopback that should already be there, add something like this:
192.168.1.1 Compaq.home Compaq

That's your IP address, computer_name.domain and alias for your computer.

This will only be good for a static IP address, in which case you should know it. For slackware I can use ifconfig (as root) to get my IP address. RH has that or something like it I'm sure.
