What Port to Use for HP DV9730US With AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-64?
Hey all,
I have an HP DV9730US laptop arriving at my home soon. ( yes, I've heard they can be a pain for Linux ). I would like to install Debian on this laptop. (I have Etch on several desktops and generally like Debian). I am a bit behind in my research of recent hardware. What port of the Linux kernel is appropriate for the AMD Turion 64X2 TL-64? Am I looking for the AMD64? ( note to moderators - I'm a newb, but move this to laptop forum if appropriate - thanks ) TIA, Tom |
Either amd64 or i386 (if you want to run the 32-bit version).

Thanks! I figured that the AMD64 was what I was looking for. I checked Debian's site and lists and didn't see explicit support for the Turion flavor, so I wasn't sure it would take the AMD64 port. I have a copy of Etch i386 handy in case I run into problems. I'm anticipating the usual HP headaches ( Broadcom wireless, Odd Nvidia set up, cool peripherals with obscure installs, etc ).
I've also seen posts that you need to set a value like pci=nopirq in the boot options ( that value is not correct, couldn't find the right one ). I dont' need the laptop up and running right away, so this should be a fun way to learn more. I would like to utilize the full potential of the 64 bit hardware. I'll probably be back soon on the laptop and other forums! Thanks again, Tom |
