What Linux do I have to go from Mandrake?
Hello,
I have been using Mandrake linux for about a year now and now I have moved to Mandrake 10.1 which by the way is the worst of Mandrake. It crashes more than 9.2 and very unstable. Now, the problem here is, I don't know what other distro is good to go for, debian, ventor linux, fedora, ...? I don't need any special feature, all I need is 1- everything to be free!!! 2- easy to install software on, 3- KDE 3 4- very stable 5- having no problem with WIN XP dual boot and fast. What distro would you guys think I go for? Thanks, Alireza |
Have a look at Distrowatch, our Distro Review section and do a search of LQ for "which distro". This question comes up over and over again and there are many opinions on the boards.

SuSE 9.2 Personal. If you want it to fly, try Slackware-based VectorLinux. The SOHO Edition uses KDE & Gnome.

Hi,
I came from MDK 10.1 CE myself. I upgraded because of MDK's CE version is just fine until you keep stumbling across little niggling bugs and problems. So I moved to Fedora Core 3 as it's supposed to be more stable and better supported. And guess what: It IS! It has a minor issue with it being somewhat tricky to install the NVidia drivers on Fedora (check for threads about this specifically...), everything works very well, uses KDE and Gnome and just rocks... Good luck. |
try pclinuxos its stable and is easy to configure,or maby you could try slackware if you want to learn a bit

PCLinuxOS is Mandrake-based, as far as I remember... so it isn't much of an escape plan. But it is actually not too much like Mandrake.

jup and its more stable just the kernel is mandrake i think
and you can try it as livecd because he has already worked with mandrake maby this is his solution |
PCLinuxOS is like Mandrake done right.

arch linux. easy, fast, and stable.

I would try debian or maybe slack. A bit more difficult than mdk but you should be fine. It should also be more stable then what you are using now.

Yea, I tried going to Mandrake 10.0 from 9.1, and I hated it, so I went back to 9.1. But now I'm going to try my hands at Slackware 10.0 as soon as I burn the ISOs
