What is your favorite flavor of Linux?
 

As my third computer runs Linux RedHat 9 (and tomorrow maybe MS3.11), I think of the history. I enjoy loading an Atari or TI99/4a and just marveling in the rich past that I have grown up with. Typing a do loop with asterisks to watch the snow fall - does it get better than this?

Will I say, as my TV & radio enthusiastic grandfather said, "I went from horse and buggy to men on the moon", and how great our time period was? What are your thoughts?

People make too much of technology. I don't have a single extra second in my day because of it, and I've been around long enough to remember life without computers, cell phones, digital cameras, etc. And I am certainly no more happy today than back then. But, progress marches on and so do we.

I know what you mean, I have been around for some time now, true happiness is never found in things we get or use. In fact as technology marches on I think we become less as individuals with its progression. We used to be our brothers keeper, now most of us just keep to our selves.

If you are not happy in what you do, then change something.

By the way, the only people that say technology is there to make you happier/more fulfilled are salesmen ;)

I personally wanted to get into computers since I was 5 and really enjoy my work. Some people think that is sad, but surely what is really sad is doing something just for the money and not liking what you do.

Life is too short to spend most of it doing things that you don't enjoy.

I don't think he meant he was sad, or hated his job in that fashion.. I think he meant that, technology was supposed to save us so much time we could go fishing instead of working so hard, instead technology has just created more busy work..

I still want my flying car, my jetpack, and a food replicator, that I can hit the button and get a nice juicy steak & potatoes. Instant gratification. You know Labor saving technology device like in Wall-E then we can take it easy, smell the flowers, admire the view, have time to spend lounging around fishing withhout all sorts of devices buzzing and ringing no matter where you are.

How true! At 9 years old he left school to work in a lumber mill. By the 1940's grandpa was raising a family of his own, attending school and working a full time job. He saw a lot of wonderful advancements occur. However, I do not see my day getting shorter because of them either.
