Thumbs up What is the Use of Runlevel 4 in linux?


Kindly post what is the use of Runlevel 4 (unused/reserved runlevel) in Linux? Kindly post few examples when should the runlevel be used?

There is no proper use for it it just gives you more flexibility in your setup. It could be, for example, a runlevel for production applications to be running with them being stopped on runlevel 3.

Slackware uses runlevel 4 to run the X-server.

In fact the definition of runlevels depends on the distribution. With the highly configurable distributions (for example Gentoo) you'll more or less define your own runlevels.

As an example you can define a special runlevel for a laptop which is in battery-mode and adapt it for less energy-consumption.
