What is the problem with Flash and Linux working together?

I'd like to kind of get an understanding why Flash and Linux do not work together any better than they do. Personally, I've had nothing but problems with my two month old install of Linux Mint 7 and Flash, primarily in the area of sound. Flash, Linux and Firefox work but not very well together. I notice on some sites that have a flash pop-up to access your hardware (e.g. mic and webcam) flash can't access my mic at all and it will access my built-in webcam but only briefly then it goes haywire.

Flash is deeply ingrained in the web, has been for years now. Adobe has released plug-ins and players for the Linux OS. Why don't their poducts work as well in Linux as they do in Windows.

Is Linux that difficult of a OS to write software for?

I really don't know and I would appreciate anyone knowlegeable to help me understand this topic. Thanks!

What kernel version are you running? What webcam and driver? What mic and sound driver? What flash version?

While Linux development has been slower than Windows for many Windows-based multimedia content, Linux has advanced much throughout the years and is continuing to develop at a fast rate. Vendors are slower to develop in Linux, generally, but many more are supporting Linux. For what I have needed, I have not had many problems with Flash support in Linux. A while back, it did not seem to work very well, but it is much better now. Try to upgrade your Linux version or distribution, and install the latest Flash.

well... I'm using kernel ver 2.6.28-11-generic & I'm running the latest version of flash. The other information (webcam, mic, drivers) I really don't know (all built-in). But, when looking up information on how to "fix" the problems I'm having I see many many others having these same or smiliar problems. I was just wondering why this very prevalent software doesn't work any better on Linux than it does. I'll eventually try your suggestions of upgrading the kernel and trying to get things tailored to my specific hardware but doing all those things takes a fair amount of time to learn how to do. I just kinda needed things to work "out-of-the-box." I do thank you for taking a moment to reply to the post.
