what is the meaning of "out of range"?

Hello friends. after a 3.000 km. car travel and a change of monitor my mandrake 9.2 distro does not want to start. i just see on the screen the message "out of range" In some others posts that i,ve seen looks like a problem of screen resolution. (before that i got a 19" monitor at 1280 x 1024. now 17" at 1024x800)
can anybody help me to resolve this question?
thanks from a newbie...

That means that the screen can't handle the resolution
at the given refresh-rate. I'd suggest booting into single
user mode (console) and changing your X configuration
with the appropriate Mandreck tools ... :} (or manually,
using vi ... or xf86cfg ... or )

Cheers,
Tink

y sue mandrake tools?, the tools that come with xfree86 are more tehn enought, just type
xf86config
answser all teh questions, if the awsers there arnt what you got just take the closest (better to round down tehn up), and if in doupt make a guess (in other words pick the lowest setting for refresh rate as it should work if you cant find the refresh rate in the monitor manule),

things you need
-video cards specs
-monitor specs
-mouse specs (basicaly what kinda conection and teh device were its at)
-keybord specs(realy dont needs these as all you need to know are how many keys your bords has, and if in doupt the generic 101 key Us keybords should work for almsot all keybrods)

Hi friend. i tried the second option, but nothing happens... I do not know enough Linux to do more. How can i use the mandrake tools if my mandrake don't want to start?
Thanks.

what do you mean it wont start?, does it giv you a boot screen?, or does the bios just not boot up the hard drive?

After run xconfig on the console without results, i do not know what more i can do, nor execute the draktools because i cannot come to the graphic interface and i have no idea about code, so...

I also use w2k on my computer to work (dreamweaver & photoshop most of all) but i have gotten problems as well in my windows partition and after use Norton Ghost to recovery the windows o.s. all the other partitions, including some data and stuff and the linuz partition is lost, so i must to reinstall everything again...
