What is the history of UNIX printing and how do you configure a printer on LInux?

I have installed the Linux os on my personal pc and Im having difficulty getting a printer installed and set up. Any help and any suggestions will be useful.

See:
http://www.openprinting.org/printers

Check to see if your printer is listed and its level of support as well as recommended driver.

The more info you post about your problem, the faster in can be resolved: distribution, printer make and model, things you have tried, drivers you have installed, etc.

Sorry, you're going to have to provide actual details, before we can help. What version/distro of "the linux" did you load? What kind of printer are you trying to set up?

Most distros have a printer configuration utility...have you tried that? You can also try to Google for CUPS how-to's, for your particular distro.
