what is the difference between tomcat.og and catalina.out?

I know that tomcat is the higher level server, and catalina is the servlet container. What is the difference between tomcat.log and catalina.out? Which one would tell if tomcat was down, which one would tell if catalina was down, and what is the difference? I know this is an elementary questiom...

Everything "Catalina" relates to "Tomcat". "Tomcat" is "Catalina".

And yes, the "catalina" log pertains exclusively to the servlet container part of "tomcat" - but remember, servlets and JSP's are probably the only reason you're using Tomcat in the first place.

You can't really debug a "servlet" problem without looking at Tomcat. Conversely, any given "Tomcat" problem might well relate back to something in the Catalina log.

'Hope that helps .. PSM
