What is the difference between Gnome, KDE, Xfce ???
Are there a difference of user interface only OR some other parameters? I am having Ultimate Edition and have all these desktops installed. When I try theme, they look to be different in look and feel only. Some are having upper panels and some lower panels like windows.

Pretty much as you have discovered ... they are mainly variations on a theme. I believe xfce may have the smallest foot print in comparison to the others.
Ultimately it boils down to what you like :) |

Just thought it may be worth pointing out that you may end up with a skewed opinion of desktop environment (or window manager for that matter) with the default settings of the DE (or WM). Eg Panels being on the top or bottom of the screen is kind of irrelevant since that type of thing can be customized to your liking. Play with as many different ones as you can and you'll find something you really like.

If you wish to see a really light weight environment, have a look at fluxbox

Also try LXDE if you want something light weight. However, to have a good balance between eye candy and performance, take a look at GNOME Shell.

Hmm, if light weight eyecandy is something you're after, it would be worth while checking out the current version of enlightenment (aka e17 aka dr17).

Even the tools that come with one desktop can be used with another: you can browse files with Konqueror in Gnome or Nautilus in KDE, although it seems a bit pointless. There are always one or two things that are particular to certain environments, though: my vertical panel with clock couldn't be done in something like Fluxbox. |
