What is the command to know total number of process running on linux system

I just want to know is there any command to know how many process are running on linux system.. Using TOP command we can see the total number of tasks. I have tried this command which bring me the second line of top command output.

#top | sed '2!d'

So i just want to know the command which can print the total number of running processes straight forward.

If you want a live view of the system, try top. You can also use ps with a couple of options but ps only gives you an instantaneous image of processes. top keeps refreshing its display.

I strongly recommend you read the man pages for top and ps. These programs are extremely useful.

I think task and process are two words for the same thing. So I do not really understand your question.
