What are the hardware specs of the HP Mini? This will help determine the best operating system.

My personal recommendation for new Linux users is Linux Mint. (Assuming the computer meets the hardware requirements.)

normally i'd recommend an ubuntu flavor, however my personal experience on my laptop i'd rather suggest a vanilla debian installation. ubuntu flavors always pitch errors at me when i use it for desktop type stuff. my server runs ubuntu and i never hear a peep from it, laptop is always something. since switching to debian it has been as quiet as a mouse in regards to errors.

also just because he's young doesn't mean he needs a super easy distro. children are more apt to learn than adults, give him something he has to learn. not something that does it all for him. will be better in the long run.

There was a whole series called HP Mini, with 1 or 2GB of RAM and Windows XP or Vista, but all with the Intel Atom 270. Obviously you need something lightweight, but it's not a case of AntiX or nothing.

It depends on the age and resourcefulness of the nephew! I would not recommend a pure Debian (and that includes AntiX): too unfriendly if problems arise. Mint Mate might do, and Salix Xfce certainly would. Both have the advantage of having manuals available

I've just received a copy of Linux Format, January edition, LXF232, which comes with a free bootable DVD with a collection of 32 bit Distros for underpowered Netbook type systems. Distros included are Pepermint 8, Legacy OS, Antix 16, Tiny Core 8 and Linux Lite 3.6.

No, I don't work for them but I'm going to see which of these distros works on a beyond Sell-by-date Dell mini 9 I was unable to sell to the local Computer Exchange shop.

Actually. When I sell one of my n270 atom netbooks. I sell them with android i386 on them. People are kinda funny on the phone when you don't mention Windows and say Linux instead. But say Android? Then they continue to listen instead of saying. I'll get back with you on this or let me think about it.

Here is the answer, not a guess or maybe. I tried about eight different distro‘s but either would not load or would not have driver functionality for all the peripherals of the device. LXLDE (32 bit 18.04) loads painlessly from a thumb drive using universal USB installer. (Do not use Rufus). Your little HP mini will work beautifully and have just about all the goodies you need right out of the box.

It comes with the Seamonkey browser which is good, uses less RAM than Firefox or chrome

Worth all the poking around to find the right distro!
