What is the *-*-* meaning in the xterm*font?

i have editted my .Xresources file
xterm*background: black
xterm*foreground: green
xterm*scrollBar: false
xterm*font: *-fixed-*-*-*-12-*

use this command to make the new changes to take effect
#xrdb -merge .Xresources
