What is software interrupt, exception, trap, fault


Can some one help me understanding these terms with examples and the differences between them.

Software Interrupt.

Exception

Trap

Fault.

Have you looked here:

And according to wiki
exception: An action that is not part of ordinary operations or standards

Was that a homework by the way?

No ....It is not home work. As said in my intro email...I am learning operating system concepts and learning linux. I am a DSP engineer... I did spent my time in coding C and assembly and now I am learning towards embedded side.

I am going through embedded sw primer text and got diverted and searching net for thorough understanding and got more confused with these terms. I though I would better ask in LQ. Thats it. Thanks btw
