Question What is Snort?

When I installed Linux, it asked me to creat a new user after setting the root password. The default name that Linux showed me was Snort. I did not accept that name and went with my own choice. What is this snort by the way?

is there any program snort? There is one group named snort on my machine. I do not know what does that group do. How and why is it created?

Could anybody through some light on that please!

Three ways of answering such a question are:
1) man snort (if it happens to be installed)
2) - use some general keyword like "software" or "program" to accompany the main search term
