What is need for internet with Fedora Core 5?

I just got Fedora Core 5 for my computer and I love it. Everything is going great expect for online connectivity. I asked questions at another forum and got no answer, so now I know how to asked them in more detail. First thing, I have a Conexant 56k ACLink Modem in my computer. I found a driver for my modem (forgot the name, but its the one for Conexant modems), it didnt work. When I installed it, it wanted to DL some packages but couldn't becuase of no net. My second, and I think biggest problem, I have internet with AOL. I've done my research, and found a page about Linux and AOL, but it didnt work out too great. I've also heard its about impossible to setup right. I'm thinking about getting another service. I was looking at NetZero. I read the offer an internet service for Linux, right? In short, what do I need to do from scratch to get internet access?

A couple of questions:

1. Are you seeking to connect with broadband or dial-up? The modem you describe is only suitable for dial-up at 56K.

2. Do have a router and an ethernet card installed?

By far the easiest thing you can do is use an ADSL modem/router combination for broadband internet connection. That is straightforward and works with almost no internvention from you. If you are going to remain with dial-up, the easiest thing is an external serial modem. The setup is much easier that with the modem you described, though it is possible to use the modem you have because I have used it in the past.

With regard to you ISP, as far as I am aware AOL is NOT compatible with Linux since you have to use their browser. I this has changed someone can correct me.

I was familiar with NetZro many years ago when they offer free dialup. If that is still the case, they will work with Linux.

When you ask about AOL, you are going to get some strong opinions. AOL has thrived by making easy what some people might have thought difficult--ie accessing the myriad resources on the web. Most of the basic stuff is quite easy to set up on your own.

So--first--drop AOL and get an ISP that just gives you a connection.

Second, using Linux without broadband could become very frustrating. There is always something to be downloaded. Depending on where you live, getting DSL might be not all that expensive.
