what is Linux "SMP"
 

I installed Redhat linux 9 for the first time in my life...
In the boot screen i can see 2 Linux version ...
one of them with a bizzard name of ....LINUX "SMP" :confused: :confused:


what is the difference between the normal one and Linux SMP....

which one i have to choose

SMP = Symmetric MultiProcessing, i.e. multiple CPUs

If you have multiple CPUs, you should be using the SMP kernel; I don't know why you would have non-SMP kernels installed.

"SMP" stands for "Symmetric Multi Processing". You would use the SMP version only if your PC had two or more CPUs (i.e. if you had a multi-processor PC).

Normally, you'd choose the non-SMP kernel.

My guess would be that you just need to go with the regular...

SMP kernel allows a multi-processor (more than 1 CPU) system or hyper-threading (eg: Pentium 4 HT) systems perform better. May be you don't have either and the installer guessed wrong. But I guess you are having a P4HT.

Selecting either at boot-time won't turn your computer into a brick. If you really have one of the above situations it's better to boot with SMP for better performance.

Yet another time in this forum, I have to recomment switching to a newer distro. RH9 is old. If you need help about similar distros search LQ, I have mentioned this several times, and lot others, too.

BTW, I like the name "franklampard". He's one of my favourite players.
