what is kernel-source??
i recently installed the RedHat Fedora Core 4 and i have no previous experience with linux, so i am completely new, and i mean very very new...
i was following a guide in installing my DLINK DWL-650+ wireless PCMCIA card, and in somewhere of the guide, i was asked to install and verify the presence of a kernel-source pakage... i typed "ls /lib/modules/`uname -r`/build/include/linux/version.h" and i got an unsuccessful output : ls: /lib/modules/2.6.11-1.1369_FC4/build/include/linux/version.h No such file or directory i followed the guide and run the "Add/Remove Application", the guide asked me to find a missing package known as gcc and also "kernel-source" or something similiar, the problem is, i can't find it anywhere in it... so i can only install the gcc compiler but not the kernel-source... next, i browsed the linux installation cd and found some files starts with the word "kernel"(e.g kernel-2.6.11-1.1369_FC4.i686.rpm, kernel-xen0-2.6.11-1.1369_FC4.i686.rpm and many more)... but when i try to install it(kernel-2.6.11-1.1369_FC4.i686.rpm), it says "the package 'kernel' has already installed"... i'm wondering whether is this package what the guide was talking about, i think not as what the guide needs is "kernel-source" and not "kernel"... i've google "kernel-source" and been to "kernel. org" where kernel source is avaliable... i have no idea which to download and i have no idea how to deal with it or how to install it after i download it... please, anyone, can anyone tell me how to solve this or where can i get the kernel-source from RedHat Fedora Core 4's cd or where to find the kernel source and what to do with it when i found it... |
Check out section 6.2.2.3 in this link:
http://fedora.redhat.com/docs/release-notes/fc4/ You need the Fedora kernel source for your original kernel, not from kernel.org. |
i still can't get the problem fix, i'm stuck at "yum update" this time...

thank you everybody....
i can get it up and running now... thank you very much.. |
Did you get everything installed ?? I had the same issue and I installed the Kernel src as it was suggested but even after that I can not locate version.h in the directory it is supposed to be in, regarding to the site.
I am trying to install an AIRLINK AWLC3025 and am using www.houseofcraig/acx100_howto.php as a reference guide. So far it has been very easy but I get stuck with the version.h and the build. My build ln was initially a broken ln as it went to ../../../usr/kernel/ and so on which was not present. How do I get the version.h to show up there and how can I fix the build link. |
