what is gvfs

Is there a good tutorial on gvfs that explains in non-jargon language what it is and how one might use it? What I find when I Google "what is gvfs" just throws some jargon about virtual file system and fuse but doesn't explain what it is or how it's used.

Thanks

The wikipedia page sums it up pretty nicely. It's a single point of access to mount a variety of network protocols, as direct protocol specific uri's or locally mounted in the filesystem. Not sure what else you're want to hear as a general description.
