Modem/ Internet, What is going on?

I went from mandrake 9.1 to 10 official and now instead of seconds it takes 3 minutes or more for a standard web page to come up. I have a dial up connection and made sure no other programs were running. I am very much a noob and you will have to take me step by step from the very beginning. I dont know how to use the command line at all. Oh yeah, I picked up my phone to listen to see if it was connected and noticed that the initial connection signal (noise for lack of a better term,,,noob remember) kept repeating itself at about a 10 second interval.

Might be your internet provider. I had a sinilar problem with one provider, but other providers worked perfect.

(btw: try making the title a little more descriptive. It'll get you more specific attention :) )

robby737 06-26-2004 09:55 AM

Like I said I am a noob not sure how you want me to be more descriptive? All I can say is that my windows and 9.1 only took seconds to load a page with the same provider. And I dont know what the nomenclature is for the initial sound a modem makes when it is querrying the server for response upon initial contact

robby737 06-26-2004 10:14 AM

by the sound, it seams that it doesnt know its connected and keeps sending the initial querry signal and im only receiving inbetween hence the long load times

most likely you're using a winmodem and the drivers are corrupt. try reinstalling them.

Just meant the title of your post. The more specific the title, the easier for any other member to see if they think they might be able to help you. Something like "modem takes very long to connect after upgrade" might be more 'inviting' and helpful

Now that I come to think of it. If you are using a Linmodem, I'm surprised it even works under MDK 10. From what I've read I thought there were only drivers available for kernel versions 2.4.* and none for 2.6.* What kernel version did you install?

robby737 06-26-2004 10:52 AM

I loaded kernel 2.6 and have a hardware modem not a winmodem. The modem was recognized by pnp. Not sure I gave the correct info, I am not sure what a linmodem is.

linmix 06-26-2004 11:28 AM

Linmodem= Winmodem that is supported by linux (driver is available)

Winmodem= software modem. uses cpu power to do certain tasks that 'real' modem would do by itself. On slower computers this can influence the connection speed significantly.

robby737 06-26-2004 11:30 AM

well I have a hardware modem so thats not my problem

XavierP 06-26-2004 12:59 PM

What is the make and model of your modem?

robby737 06-26-2004 01:32 PM

I think its something like a best data 56.

XavierP 06-26-2004 01:36 PM

Internal or external? I'm guessing internal. What's the label on the pci card say on it - in full?

robby737 06-26-2004 01:38 PM

its an external and Im at work and cant get info off the modem

robby737 06-26-2004 01:41 PM

This modem worked fine for 9.1 and one thing I didnt mention earlier is that when you go to net monitor the speed is fine. I still think the computer believes its not connected and continues its initial connection actions and is delaying the upload

XavierP 06-26-2004 01:42 PM

On your phone (that the modem is connected into), do you have call waiting or some kind of answering service? In the UK, the BT answering service sends a signal down the line (resulting in a broken tone) when you have a message waiting - as I remember to my cost, that plays havoc with dial in services.
