Question What is best Internet facing distro for SME

I am setting up an Internet facing server (website + file sharing+email POP)inside ADSL connection. Service 5 pc's for small business with basic office apps.

Looking at UBUNTU 11.x but hear different opinions about the choice.

I need to consider security, uptime, ease of use.
Any pointers will be appreciated

why would you pick ubuntu 11.something? Neither are LTS releases, so will not be supported in the future, which is surely a key factor? Ubunutu LTS releases are, AFAIR, 10.04 and 12.04.

But for a proper server - http://www.CentOS.org

why would you recommend a storage distro for a server?

Question Open source redo

Hi All
Thanks for the feedback.
I'm old (1995)CNE4-6(Enterprise Novell/SUSE+Grpwise+BorderManager+ZEN) who had Small (Microsoft based Recruitment) company since 2006 to 2011.(MCSE_NT40 ->2000).

Now I'm into OpenSource SME Solutions (2013- South Africa) and need to find out what works - Using Ubuntu 11.04 for lab testing and need solid Industry advice.

Currently - Small Service Provider -Target market NGO's, cash strapped SME's - acquired server/coding skills (html, Javascript, C#, CSS, PHP, Apache, mySQL,webapps, playing with Drupal, cpanel, etc).
Any pointers?

whats a sme (service manager expert ?). whats an ngo (non-governmental organization ?).

this is a broad subject that many go to college to get the basics (so i doubt it can be adequately covered in a post), my advice would be to start with select a distro... (test a few live-usb's).

a lot of your needs seem to be site specific so perhaps a few configurations or scripts would help in automating your process.

if you got your heart settled on ubuntu you would probably be better off installing the ubuntu with lts (long term support). i think 12.04.

i think any new distro is capable of hosting a lamp configuration.

sme means small/medium enterprise in this context.

Smoothwall shouldn't really be used as a *server*. You may well want to run smoothwall as the firewall, but as a half serious place to actually serve business services from, no way.

A server should never ever be directly internet facing, and I'd have always taken the OP's context to mean internet facing, behinda n appropriate firewall.
