What is all this junk in the /tmp folder?

Is the /tmp folder the Linux equivalent of the Temporary Internet Files folder? Can I delete everything and anything in it? Stuff seems to be piling up in it...

Smart answer = Temp files

It isn't equivalent to tempory internet files however. Often times programs will put lock files and temp. data files in there while they are running. So it isn't a good idea to just blindly delete everything in there. You can, however, feel free to delete all those files before unmounting your root partition on shutdown if you'd like.
