What is a CVS and....
 

I haven't quite grasped what a CVS is although I "think" it is a [method|program|concept|magical thingie] that enables one to upgrade their software without creaming any custom modifications that they've already implemented. Still, I'm confused as to how one uses it. Assuming I have a piece of software installed, is there a standard command that updates the software or does it just list the changes?

Any sophmoric explaination would be appreciated.

CVS is a source code repository... people working on projects submit thier 'nightly builds' thier and other developers can get and attach thier code to it. If you absolutely need the latest build on an app, use CVS... other wise go with the latest release or beta. I've never had much luck using CVS. Keep in mind that any source you get from there hasnt undergone the full testing process and is usually buggy.
