What is a *.*~ file ???

Hi All

Whenever I create a file (any extension), there is another file that is automatically created in the same directory.
If the file i create is there would be a file
What is this file? is it important? is it ok to delete it?
And any more relevent information is appreciated please...

It's only an archive of the original file. Any time you make a change to your file(s) the older version then gets archived automatically. You can delete if you wish.

if you are using any GUI editor, like gedit, check the preferences and uncheck the option create a backup copy of files before saving. This will stop creating them.
