You rewrite Samba to be in french, well you made changes and you need to distribute the source code and give props to the original creators, etc. Its not yours to keep per se, you didn't write it and can't say its only yours.
You don't have to redistribute it if your not giving it away but only using it for personal reasons, etc.
www.gnu.org has links to the GPL and other licenses with I'm sure FAQ you can read, etc.
