What filesystem do most people use, or choose when installing Linux?

I have used reiserfs in the past but am having a problem on a new install.
Do most people use reiser?
What do most linux users use?

The ReiserFS may not be well maintained. Ext3 is the mainstay filesystem for Linux workstations. If this is for a video file server or a large database, one of the others like xfs or jfs may be better. Ext3 ( and ReiserFS ) are written to be used across a large base of computers, and so isn't optimized as much as some others, but is more reliable if you have an accidental shutdown, which is more apt to happen on a workstation.

LVM isn't a filesystem though - you still create a filesystem within the LVM just as you would on a partition.

If you are have a partition where you have large files such as videos then xfs is good. Other than that I have used reiserfs too and found it works just find. However, I always use ext3 other than for my video partitions these days.

I've only ever used ext3, because I've never got around to checking out the alternatives.

ext3 is the pretty standard for workstation install. I have XFS running on an old Dell Latitude CPx, and am really pretty impressed with it. I have crashed/hard shutdown a few different times for different reasons, and have had no ill effects.

Hi,

I prefer 'ext2/3' for support that will be around for GNU/Linux.

I always use XFS except for my boot partitions because I have many files that are in the order of gigabytes; but even for small files, xfs can be quite fast providing that the proper options are applied.
