what does /tmp contain???

while messing around with my linux, i got an error messages from Gnome about stale locks and such in /tmp directory.

So being a linux newb i just deleted /tmp and restarted the computer.
(well .. actually i moved it , not deleted it - to back it up just in case)

So it resulted in machine giving me black screen upon the time that it should be entering X, and it keeps turning on/off the display as if it tries to fins a good videomode. I say it because i can hear that specific static sound when you turn on or off the monitor.

So now i dont have access to virtual terminals Ctrl-Alt -F1

Leave X and replace the /tmp directory.
It's really a very important part of the system....used by many applications. If you want to remove temp files, just delete the _contents_ of the /tmp directory...not the directory itself.

Edit: This is yet another reason to NOT be root until it's absolutely necessary. Had you been a regular user, you would have gotten a message saying that you don't have permission to rm /tmp....this may be enough to make you think about WHY.
