what does this kde error message mean

Sorry - Konqueror

could not find mime type

application/octet-stream

what the hell does that mean??

i think it came up after deleting the x-mp3 file type so i could make my own that xmms would open not sure tho

i get this damn error message every time i load up konqueror

That means that there is a plugin that is loaded to play that media type, but it (the plugin) wasn't found or didn't load properly. Remove it from the Konq. Preferences.

I had the same problem a while ago. I solved it by deleting the file
$HOME/.kde/share/mimelnk/application/octet-stream.desktop
Like you, I'm not sure what put it there in the first place.

I also had that problem after adding a few items in Preferences->File Association, and after a few restart of konqueror,
it would give the error and just die at the start.

I solved it in a weird way. In Preferences->File Associations, create application/octet-stream. Then remove
$HOME/.kde/share/mimelnk/application/octet-stream.desktop

The File Association entry for application/octet-stream is still there, but you can't remove it since Remove button is greyed out.
At least everything works now. It is quite strange.
