What does this error mean?
Hi,
I have RH8.0 Linux. When I log in (KDE) I get the following error: "An error occurred while loading or saving configuration information for rhn-applet. Some of your configuration settings nay not work properly" In the details it says: "Failed to contact configuration server, some possible causes are that you need to enable TCP/IP networking for ORBit, or you have stale NFS locks due to a system crash. (Details - 1: IOR file '/home/.../.gconfd/lock/Ior' not opened successfully, no gconfd located: No such file or directory. 2: IOR file '/home/.../.gconfd/lock/Ior' not opened successfully, no gconfd located: No such file or directory." If I log in with Gnome, the screen is a mess, can't use it. I'm not sure I can understand what it's saying. Can someone suggest what may be wrong and what to do to correct it? Thanks |
gconfd
You might try searching what gconfd is... I saw that particular file / program twice in your post.
Typically: "conf" = configuration a "d" at the end of something = daemon (server / program) You also mentioned GNOME Makes me wonder if it's a GNOME configuration server. |
Well, according to Google, rhn-applet is a panel applet that notifies you when new packages are available. Now I'm no expert (I use neither Red Hat nor Gnome), but the way I read the error is that the rhn-applet is failing on start up because it can't find or access gconfd.

So what you have to do is diagnose the gconf problem. Is it installed? Is the daemon running? Are file permissions for the conf files set properly? Hopefully this will give you a starting point. Good luck! |
Thanks a lot for answering.
I know that gconfd is there. I haven't checked the permissions. How can I check if the deamon is running? I'm usually using KDE when in Linux, not so much Gnome, so I'm ok for the moment, but this error keeps popping up and Gnome is not usable at all. |
me too
I've been having this exact same problem. Gnome is completly wrecked, and the reason the redhat updater isn't working right in KDE is because it trys to go online to check to see what's up, and I can't get online, so yea there you have it, no net=no redhat updater. But I can't figure out for the life of me how to get the net working again!!! HELP!!!!
some other comments- the error I get says that it is unable to contact the configuration server and lists some possible causes as being taht I need to enable TCP/IP networking for ORBit, or that I have stale NFS locks due to a systems crash it then lists a gnome site http://www.gnome.org/projects/gconf/ it also mentions the gconfd file. when I try to install gnome from the FC3 boot disk I a unable to, in fact it seems like nothing gnome related is working at all (even gedit) any ideas???
